Kenny Tate, Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Kenneth “Kenny” Tate has started several private companies in South Florida over the past 35 years. In 2009, Kenny co-founded Tate Capital, LLC., an active purchaser of over $900 million of institutional-grade real estate (some purchased through related distressed debt). Tate Capital oversees all asset and property management of these assets. In 2014, a group of investors under the management of Tate Capital purchased the Bahia Mar Hotel & Marina Resort on Fort Lauderdale Beach. Every November, Bahia Mar is the home of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, the largest in-water boat show in the world.
In addition, in 1996, he started forming a group of companies operating under the TKO Apparel brand name. These companies currently design and import men’s and women’s clothing under private labels for many of America’s better-known national brands and/or retailers.
Before forming TKO Apparel, Mr. Tate co-founded Tate Development Corporation, a developer/builder of single-family homes and commercial properties.
Kenny has held a certified general contracting license in the State of Florida for over 40 years and was appointed by two Governors to serve on the State of Florida Contractors Licensing Board for seven years. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, Mr. Tate was directly involved in the management and work of distressed real estate as a Receiver for multiple State Courts in Miami-Dade and Broward County, Florida. In the 1980s thru the late 2000s, Mr. Tate was an owner and the managing partner of the Villa del Ray Golf Club, an 18-hole championship golf course located in Delray Beach, Florida.
Kenny, a native of South Florida, has developed a strong sense of community pride. Accordingly, he feels a commitment to give back to the community that has been so good to him. He has been an active participant and contributor to many local non-profit organizations, giving tirelessly his time and financial resources. Mr. Tate currently serves on the boards of Nova Southeastern University, the Broward Workshop, the Broward Performing Arts Foundation, and Theatre Aspen. He is a former board member of the Community Foundation of Broward and Kids In Distress. Kenny was also the Volunteer Chair of NSU’s Realizing Potential Philanthropic Campaign, which recently achieved its goal of raising over $250 million for NSU, at the time the largest fundraising effort in the history of Broward County.
Mr. Tate is a graduate of Vanderbilt University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering, and Duke University, where he earned an MBA.
Kenny and his wife, Sandy, have been married for over 44 years, and together they have three adult daughters.
James D. Tate, North Miami, Florida
James “Jimmy” Tate has been an integral part of the multi-faceted Tate family business for over 40 years. Jimmy co-founded, with his brother Kenny, Tate Capital LLC.
Over the years, the various Tate companies have developed and constructed a hundred properties, as well as owned, operated, and managed a real estate portfolio well above $1 billion. In the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew, Tate Development managed the reconstruction efforts for approximately 2,500 single and multi-family residences which were destroyed. He was also directly involved in the management and distressed real estate workout efforts for multiple State Court Receiverships in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties.
Jimmy is also owner/principal of TKO-Evolution Apparel, an $80 million a year apparel company specialized in the manufacturing and importing of primarily men’s and women’s apparel under private labels for well-known national brands and retailers.
Mr. Tate’s most recent venture was the acquisition of the Bahia Mar Resort, Hotel, and Marina. He is in the planning stage of its billion-dollar mixed-use redevelopment effort. Co-owner and President of Tate Capital, Mr. Tate also specializes in the acquisition and servicing of distressed debt and real estate. Also, he has successfully acquired over $1 billion in distressed multi-family and commercial debt throughout the United States.
Born and raised in South Florida, Jimmy has a strong sense of community. He currently serves on the Florida Council of 100’s Economic and Competitiveness Committee, the Executive Board of Trustees of the Mount Sinai Medical Center, the Advisory Board of the North Miami Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Development Committee of Miami Country Day School. Over the years, he has also been a member of the Advisory Board of Lehrman Community Day School, the Florida International University Outreach Development Council Board, North Miami Mayor’s Economic Task Force Education Committee, Board of Directors for North Miami Museum of Contemporary Art, and President of Westview County Club, to name a few.
Mr. Tate is a graduate of the University of Florida, with a degree in Bachelor of Arts in Economics, where he studied real estate analysis, urban economics, public finance, government regulation of business, economic and business statistics, and introduction to engineering.
Jimmy and Janie married in 1989 and have three daughters.
